Hockey on the Town

The mission of The Oakland Hockey Project is to unite the community by bringing semi-professional hockey teams to Oakland.

We’re building this in three phases:

  • Phase 1 (2025–2026): Build community support and grassroots momentum.

  • Phase 2 (2027): Launch an expansion MWHL team, playing out of the Oakland Ice Center.

  • Phase 3 (2029): Launch an expansion ECHL team, playing out of the Oakland Coliseum.

At its core, this project comes from one belief: Oakland deserves a place to celebrate hockey — and a team that reflects the grit, creativity, and heart of The Town.

This is bigger than a team. It’s a movement for Oakland.

Standing on the

shoulders of our community

The Oakland Roots and Oakland Ballers showed us what’s possible.
They proved that professional sports in Oakland can be more than games — they can be movements rooted in community, creativity, and pride.

The Oakland Hockey Project wouldn’t exist without the path they paved. Their success, their spirit, and their relentless love for The Town inspire everything we do.

We’re not trying to replace what’s here — we’re trying to add to it. To bring that same Oakland energy to the ice.

To the Roots and the Ballers — thank you. We see you, we love what you’ve built, and we hope to carry that same spirit forward.

This city thrives when we lift each other up — and we’re ready to skate alongside you.

THE start OF SOMETHING SPECIAL

The Oakland Hockey Project was born in a parking lot after the Ballers’ first championship — a spark of inspiration that turned from “what if?” to “we’re doing this.”

What started as a late-night idea quickly became a mission: to build something lasting, local, and full of Oakland soul.
